Healthy soils are important to healty turf growth. So many times we look at the Turf and forget that what makes it really great is the soil it grows in. Spreading a good quality compost on turf helps improve the microbiology of the soil by helping to generate a climate where beneficial micro-organisms can thrive. These microbes work really well in soils because as they break down they create a sticky material that glues the fine soil particles together. This causes the soil texture to granulate, or become crumblike. Such soil texture improves porosity in hevy soils and helps hold moisture and nutrients in sandy soils. Materials that decompose slowly, such as sphagnum peat moss, do not promote granulation. To improve your turf try topdressing with compost spring and fall and aerate at least once a year.

A question we often get is how much compost does it take to topdress a lawn ? Obviously that depends on how big the lawn is and how deep you want to spread. If you spread at a 1/4'' depth you will need approximately 3/4 of a cubic yd for each 1000 square feet. This depth is fairly common. If you want to spread a 1/2'' depth it would be double that or about 1 1/2 cu. yards per 1000 sq. ft. Most of the people we talk to are spreading 1/4''. Be careful not to go over 1/2'' on existing turf. More is not necessarily better and may even have an adverse affect. Contractors tell us they are spreading, for the most part, between 6 to 9 cubic yards on a typical lawn. We hope this information is helpful.
