Compaction on athletic fields can be a big problem. This is due to a number of factors such as the amount of traffic, water content in the soil and the amount of turf cover. Linear Aetion can help reduce compaction because of it's aggressive cutting action that aerates and lifts the turf. I have people call in and ask what is the difference between compost and humus. I will give my best simple understanding. Compost is basically the decomposition of various organic substances like manure, leaves, grass clippings, etc. As the compost is broken down further by microorganisms in the soil, it turns into humus which is a gel like combination of the soil particles and or minerals, the bodies of the microbes and the organic matter. So humus becomes the end product of the decaying process and it is great stuff for the soil. It helps the soil by making nutrients more available, it helps retain nutients and improves soil texture. So by topdressing your lawn or turf area with compost you will help your soil and ultimately your grass will be healthier.
