Right now a large part of the Southeast is experiencing very dry conditions. Since the soils in the Southeast are made up of primarily clay or sandy soils Topdressing with compost can be a big plus. The compost in the clay soils helps granulate the soil increasing soil particle size so that water can permeate the soil better and the compost in the sandy soils helps retain moisture that would have other wise just passed on through. I just recently returned from a trip to Georgia where I saw lawns burning up due to lack of rain. Lawns with very little organic matter have a hard time holding moisture. The end result is lawns that burn out faster.

| The topdressing season has begun and more and more people are asking me about linear aeration and how it works. Linear aertion is a new tool that will be used in place of core aeration because it allows the user to do the topdressing first and then the aeration. This is important because after you are done with the aeration process the job is complete and you do not have to drive back over the turf and compact it. After all with linear aeration you combined processes. The topdressing material is already on the field, now you go over it with the linear aerator which decompacts the soil aerates and blends the topdressing material with the native soil and then the reciprocating fingers on the back of the machine move the combined material back into the grooves to complete the process.
