| A recent article in the Kansas City Star, Kansascity.com, written by master gardener Jim Braswell touts the value of adding compost to the soil. Jim explains that compost is partly decomposed organic matter and is created by soil inhabiting micro-organisms that break down plant tissue and turn it into a rich humus. Jim also states that compost improves the physical structure of the soil. Soils like clay and sand really benefit from the use of compost. | Today many of the lawns in the newer subdivisions have a hard time surviving due to the fact that when the lawn was established there was little topsoil present and very little organic mater in the soil profile. The oganic matter in composts promotes microbial activity and provides better water holding capabilities for the soil which in turn keeps the grass growing longer even if it gets a little dry. Topdressing with compost is beneficial for the soil biology and helps the grass stay greener longer. In some areas homeowners can find a rental yard that has a topdresser in stock to rent. Check it out and improve your lawn by topdressing.
