The U.S. Compost council published a paper on " References on the Benefits of Compost Use ". The article references a number of papers that offered information on 13 different benefits of using compost.
They are as follows;
1. Improves soil structure and porosity-creating a better plant root environment
2.Increases moisture infiltration and permeability, and reduces bulk density of heavy soils-improving moisture infiltration rates and reducing erosion and runoff
3. Improves the moisture holding capacity of light soils-reducing water loss and nutrient leaching, and improving moisture retention
4. Improves the cation exchange capacity ( CEC ) of soils-improving their ability to retain nutrients for plant use.
5. Supplies Organic Matter
6. Aids the proliferation of beneficial microbes
7. Supplies beneficial microorganisms to soils and growing media
8. Encourages vigorous root growth
9. Allows plants to more effectively utilize nutrients,while reducing nutrient loss by leaching
10. Enables soils to retain nutrients longer
11. Contain humus-assisting in soil aggregation and making nutrients more available for plant uptake
12. Buffers soil ph
13. Binds and degrades specific pollutants
To me this says USE COMPOST !!!

I just came back from the Georgia Parks and Recreation Field Day in Atlanta, where the Linear Aerator was demonstrated. There was also a topdressing demo done, where calcined clay was spread on a football practice field. The objective was to topdress calcined clay and then use the Linear Aerator to aerate and incorporate the material back into the aeration grooves. We again experienced wet conditions because of the continued rain they have experienced in the Atlanta area. The Linear Aerator was run approximately 150 feet for Demonstration purposes because it was too wet. Ron Sattle Jr. of Athletic Turf Management put on an excellent talk on the value of using the Linear Aerator ( Ron has done approximately 30 fields ) and the crowd was very positive about the results. We were able to review 2 sections of the field that had been aerated 10 days prior and 3 weeks prior. The Turf was doing excellently and you could walk from an area that was not aerated onto the area that had been Linear Aerated and definitely feel the difference. The aerated area was softer because of the decompaction action of the process.

We will actually be running the Linear Aerator on a field that has been topdressed with calcined clay. Ron Sattele Jr from Athletic Turf Management will be giving a talk on the benefits of Linear Aeration. The talks will be at 11:00am and 2:00pm.
