August is the time to begin attacking thatch in you turf. Thatch is a build up of roots and stems derived from turfgrass. Thatch can create problems in turf because it creates an environment for diseases and pests in the thatch layer. To help alleviate this problem aeration and topdressing are the best answer. The aeration, either core type or linear aeration, helps open up the thatch and topdressing, up to 1/4 inch, with a good quality compost adds beneficial microorganisms that help break down the thatch layer. Have a great Labor Day weekend.

Trying to make your own compost can be challenging if the process is not managed properly. A helpful web site on making compost is www.basic-info-4-organic-fertilizers.com . This site will help you with information on how to make it work. The author gives you seven steps for a good compost pile.

One of the problems with core aeration is dealing with the cores. With the advent of Linear aeration this is no longer a problem. The Linear Aerator is designed to cut 3'' deep groves in the soil 1/2'' wide and 3 1/2'' apart. The Linear Aeration process is different than core aeration in that you would topdress first and then aerate but with Linear aeration you are now cutting a groove in the soil, through the turf, bringing up the native soil and depositing it behind the aerator where a series of fingers reciprocate back and forth to blend the native soil with the topdressing mix and refill the grooves. At this point you are done and need not run back over the freshly aerated and decompacted turf. You can read more about linear aeration by going to www.linearaeration.com or checking out the information on the Earth & Turf Products LLC site.
