Core aeration combined with topdressing with compost in soils like clay and sand can really improve the soil and the turf quality. An article on www.iabolish.com recently spoke of the tremendous benefits of core aeration on clay soils in the Houston area to help open up the hard soil to improve drainage problems, get needed air down to the root system, reduce thatch and improve microbial activity. They went on to give good information on when to aerate. From our experience we know that adding compost to the process on clay soils also aids in granulation and improves cation exchange. By improving water infiltration and using more organics rather than chemicals we also do our part in protecting our clean water sources. Hey, we all need water to survive so let's start using healthy lawn care practices.
