Materials & Topdressing Calculator

Planning a turf project starts with knowing how much material you need. Whether you’re spreading sand, compost, manure, mushroom soil, lime, fertilizer, or topsoil, accurate measurements are the key to success. Our Materials Calculator takes the guesswork out by instantly showing you the cubic feet and cubic yards required based on your turf size and application depth.

Use this tool to:

  • Estimate material volumes for golf greens, lawns, sports fields, and landscaping projects
  • Plan your budget and delivery needs with suppliers
  • Choose the right spreader for your project
0.0 cu. ft.

1 cu ft compost = ~50lbs
1 cu ft topsoil = ~75lbs
1 cu ft sand = ~100lbs
27 cubic feet = one cubic yard.

Now that you know your material volume, see which spreader is right for your job

Why Application Depth Matters

The amount of sand, compost, or topsoil you apply directly impacts turf health and performance. Here’s why certain depths are commonly recommended:

  • Sand (1/8″ to 3/8″) → Improves drainage, firms surfaces, and smooths imperfections. Too much can stress turf, so light, consistent applications work best.
  • Compost (~1/4″) → Adds organic matter, boosts microbial activity, and improves soil structure. Over-application can smother grass, so thin layers are recommended.
  • Topsoil (1/4″–1/2″) → Levels lawns, fills depressions, and repairs damaged areas. Deep topsoil applications are often combined with seeding for best results.

Materials & Topdressing Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate the amount of sand or compost I need?

Measure your lawn or turf area in square feet, choose your application depth (e.g., 1/8”), and enter the numbers in our calculator. The tool will instantly show the cubic feet and cubic yards required.

How much sand should I use for topdressing a lawn?

For routine lawn care, 1/8″ of sand (~0.4 cubic yards per 1,000 sq. ft.) is ideal. For leveling or repairing, up to 1/4″ may be applied, but avoid burying grass blades.

What’s the right amount of compost for topdressing?

Around 1/4″ is recommended. This improves soil structure and fertility without suffocating turf. Lighter, more frequent applications can maintain soil health over time.

Why use topsoil for lawn leveling?

Topsoil is heavier and more stable than compost. Thin applications of 1/4″–1/2″ fill low spots and create a smooth, even lawn surface.
